How to Renew Your Massage Therapy License (2026)

Everything you need to know about renewing your massage therapy license. Covers deadlines, CE hours, fees, and how to avoid late penalties.

Renewing your massage therapy license is something you have to do every 1 to 4 years, depending on your state. Miss the deadline and you could face late fees or lose your right to practice. The good news: it is pretty simple if you stay on top of it.

When is your renewal date?

Each state has its own renewal cycle. Some states renew every year. Others give you 2 years. A few states renew every 3 or 4 years. Your renewal date is usually based on when you first got your license, or it falls on a set date like June 30 or your birthday.

Check your license document or your state board website for your exact date. You can also look up your state on our state requirements page.

What you need to renew

Most states ask for these things at renewal:

  • Completed CE hours (the number and categories vary by state)
  • Renewal fee (usually $50 to $200)
  • Online renewal form through your state board portal
  • Proof of liability insurance (some states)

What happens if you miss the deadline

Most states give you a grace period of 30 to 90 days. During that time you can still renew, but you will pay a late fee. If you go past the grace period, you may need to apply for reinstatement, which costs more and takes longer. In some states you cannot practice at all until your license is active again.

Track your renewal with RubCE

RubCE loads your state rules and counts down to your renewal date. It tracks your CE hours by category so you always know if you are on pace. You get push reminders at 90, 60, 30, 14, 7, and 1 day before your license expires. It is free for one license on iPhone and Android.
