Your Massage Therapy License Expired. Now What?

What to do if your massage therapy license has lapsed. Covers grace periods, reinstatement steps, late fees, and how to avoid it happening again.

If your massage therapy license has expired, do not panic. You are not alone. Many massage therapists miss their renewal date because of a busy schedule, a move to a new state, or simply not knowing the deadline.

The important thing is to act fast. The sooner you deal with it, the easier and cheaper it is to fix. Here is what to do.

Stop practicing right away

This is the hardest part, but it is critical. Practicing massage therapy with an expired license is against the law in every state. If you get caught, you could face fines, disciplinary action, or even a criminal charge in some states. Your liability insurance may also not cover you.

Do not see clients until your license is active again. Practicing on an expired license can result in fines, suspension, or losing your license permanently.

Check if you are in a grace period

Most states have a grace period after your license expires. This is usually 30 to 90 days. During the grace period, you can still renew your license, but you will pay a late fee on top of the normal renewal fee. The late fee is typically $25 to $100 depending on your state.

Go to your state board website or call them directly to find out your options. You can also check our state requirements page for links to every state board.

Complete your CE hours first

If your state requires CE hours for renewal, you need to finish them before you can renew. Check what categories your state needs. Many states require specific hours in ethics, professional boundaries, or state law. Having the right total is not enough if the hours are in the wrong buckets.

Use only NCBTMB-approved or state-approved CE providers. Hours from non-approved providers may not count.

What if the grace period already passed?

If you are past the grace period, you may need to apply for reinstatement. The process depends on your state and how long your license has been expired. Common reinstatement steps include:

  • Extra CE hours beyond what was originally required
  • A reinstatement application with a higher fee
  • A new background check
  • Retaking the MBLEx exam (if expired for more than a year in some states)

Call your state board as soon as you can. They can tell you exactly what you need. The longer you wait, the harder the reinstatement process gets.

How to make sure this does not happen again

The best way to avoid a lapsed license is to track your expiry date and start your CE hours early. Do not wait until the last month.

Set up reminders

RubCE sends push notification reminders at 90, 60, 30, 14, 7, and 1 day before your license expires. That is six chances to take action before your deadline.

Log courses as you go

Every time you finish a CE course, log it right away. Do not let certificates pile up in your email. RubCE tracks hours by category so you always know where you stand.

Know your state rules

Every state has different CE hour requirements, categories, and renewal cycles. RubCE loads your state rules automatically so you never have to look them up yourself.

Get back on track

A lapsed license is a setback, not a career ender. Most massage therapists who act quickly can get their license back within a few weeks. Once you are reinstated, set up a tracking system so it does not happen again. RubCE is free for one license and works on iPhone and Android.
